Leopold and Wolman Planform Channel Classification:

Perhaps the simplest of the numerous channel classification systems, is the Leopold and Wolman (1957) system. There are three options based on the planform pattern of the channel at the reach scale:

  • Straight
  • Meandering
  • Braided
  • Leopold, L. B., and Wolman, M. G. (1957). River channel patterns: braided, meandering, and straight, U.S. Govt. Print. Off., Washington.
